The neo-soul icon took the stage in an outfit that exaggerated her backside, seemingly making a playful commentary on the popularity of Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs).
Her look quickly sparked conversation on social media, with fans praising her confidence in rocking the oversized, tan bodysuit.
While some saw it as a jab at the BBL trend, others couldn’t get over how effortlessly she moved in the unique ensemble.
Many speculated that she was subtly encouraging people to embrace their natural bodies instead of trying to enhance them.
During the event, singer Summer Walker had the honor of presenting Erykah Badu with the Music Icon Award.
Walker, who shares a personal connection with Badu—having her as a doula during the birth of her twins—expressed her deep admiration for the artist.
“She’s been my fave artist since I was 12,” Summer Walker said before introducing a video showcasing Badu’s lasting influence on the music industry.
In her acceptance speech, Erykah Badu reflected on her artistic journey, stating, “As an artist, I never thought it was my job to be [limited] to any one category.”
She also shared a story about a conversation with her daughter, Mars Merkaba Badu Electronica, emphasizing the importance of the female body.
The 2025 Billboard Women in Music event, held at the YouTube Theater, was hosted by Laverne Cox and honored some of the most influential women in the industry.
Doechii was recognized as Woman of the Year for her innovative contributions to music, while aespa took home Group of the Year.
Other awardees included Ángela Aguilar as Breakthrough Artist and BLACKPINK’s Jennie, who received the Global Force Award.
Tina Knowles was named Mother of the Year, and Gracie Abrams earned Songwriter of the Year.
The night featured performances from honorees like Ángela Aguilar, Tyla, Megan Moroney, Muni Long, and Badu herself.
Fans were able to stream the ceremony for free on VIZIO WatchFree+, making the celebration widely accessible. The red carpet saw appearances from stars such as Meghan Trainor and GloRilla.
As for Badu, she’s currently working on a new album with producer The Alchemist. This marks her first official studio album since 2010’s New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), following her 2015 mixtape, “But You Cain’t Use My Phone.”
